Gifts for Spoonies

If there is someone in your life who has a chronic illness, it might be hard to know what to get them for Christmas or their birthday.

I've compiled a list of some things that might help, and I would love any suggestions you might have to be added.

  • I use both hot and cold packs, as many people with chronic illnesses do. If you know your friend or family member tends to run cold, opt for things that help them to stay warm. You might get them a hot water bottle and a pretty cover for it.
  • Self-care items are a great bet. Candles, essential oils, epsom salts, bath bombs, lotions for sensitive skin, a stuffed animal, or a set of comfy pajamas or socks might make them feel a little more "human" when they have been sick.
  • Blankets! You can almost never go wrong with this one. It's like wrapping your loved one in a hug.
  • Depending on their illness, they might have to wear compression garments. It might be helpful to take note of which type (yes, there are multiple types of compression socks for all the different sizes and tightness needed) so you can help build up their stock.
  • Items that help them to feel comfortable in any given space would be a thoughtful gift. This includes things that make riding in the car or working at a desk more comfortable. You might even consider getting them a tray for the days they are in bed. Think about this person's life and where they are most uncomfortable and try to think of an object that might assist with this.
  • Technology that makes their life easier is amazing. Instant Pots, slow cookers, Roombas, anything of the sort. Try to find out which chore is a problem and give them an aide for this chore.
  • Along the same line of thought, give them meals for the freezer for days that they aren't able to cook.
  • Low-maintenance plants add a lot of life to a space without a lot of work.
  • A handmade piece of art for their space would add a lot of joy as well. Maybe consider a painting, a canvas picture of a good memory, or a find from Etsy.
  • A gift card to a massage or other pain-relief service they enjoy.
  • I found a really cute pill organizer on Amazon that would make a really cute gift to someone who takes medications.
  • A pretty water bottle, especially one in a straw and that can go in the dishwasher.
  • I like to give books or streaming subscriptions to folks who are mostly stuck at home.
  • As a knitter and crocheter, I like to make cozies for things like ice cream pints when I have a friend who is cold. If you know how to knit or crochet, try to think of something that might benefit from a cozy and make one.
  • With this in mind, I make "cozies" for these friends as well. Cowl-type scarves are a favorite because they help keep you warm without much hassle and can be worn almost anywhere.

There you have it! If you can think of anything else to add, please comment below.

Blessings,

Jessica
